Articles Wishy Washy. The cloth diapers washing myths. There are so many different ways to wash cloth diapers on the internet that it can make your head spin faster than than the spin cyle on your washing machine. What detergent to use, what temperature to wash, how many times, line dry, machine dry, oh my! I'm going dispell the top ten common myths for washing cloth diapers.Myth #1~ Only use a tiny amount of detergent. Ok this is one of the worse ones I have heard yet, only use a tiny bit of laundry soap, like a tablespoon or less. This is silly. The reason for using soap is this Ssap itself does not kill bacteria but allows it to be washed away, so it is effective by removing the bacteria from your diapers. By using a tiny bit of soap you are not going to be able to wash away the bacteria. Detergents (ie. laundry soap) are used to soluablize fats and protein residues so that they wash out of the fabrics. For bacteria to actually die, you will need to set your water heater to a temperature of 110-115. Yes really thats it. Theres no need to waste energy by cranking you water heater all the way up. Hot water and detergent together attack protiens etc. contained in the poop. Without hot water, detergent is unable to be as effective. You may end up with an oily residue on your dishes or clothes. Many people well tell you you need to strip the soap out of your diapers untill theres no more bubbles. This is not totally true, first its not the soap itsself that causes the bubble, but actually a agent such a as sodium laruel sulfate that causes the soap to make more bubbles. |
